Carta

At Carta we create owners and make private markets liquid. We live in a world where some people live on the equity stack and enjoy exponential wealth growth and preferential tax treatment; others live on the debt stack and may work their entire lives for a company and retire only with the cash they’ve managed to save from their paychecks. Our contribution to solving the wealth inequality problem is moving people from the debt stack (payroll) to the equity stack. By making it as easy to issue equity to employees as it is to put them on payroll, we can create more owners. At Carta, we are helpful, transparent, fair, and kind. We are relentless executors, unconventional thinkers, and masters of our craft. To learn more, here is what one of our investors wrote about leading our Series F. Carta is still hiring for all open roles. All interviews and onboarding are conducted online while it is not safe to return to our offices.

About the Role

At Carta we create owners and make private markets liquid. We live in a world where some people live on the equity stack and enjoy exponential wealth growth and preferential tax treatment; others live on the debt stack and may work their entire lives for a company and retire only with the cash they’ve managed to save from their paychecks. Our contribution to solving the wealth inequality problem is moving people from the debt stack (payroll) to the equity stack. The Boardroom team builds software products that help our customers inform, collaborate, and manage their board approvals process with their associated stakeholders. But what does that mean? Well, from day one, companies need to establish a board of directors to handle matters of “corporate governance” -- things like approving option grants / RSUs for new employees, handling mergers & acquisitions, electing new board members, and approving a new valuation (aka: strike price) for the common stock after a financing event. In the beginning, it might just be 1 or 2 people, usually the founders. But as these companies grow and mature, the board of directors will expand to include investors, C-suite executives, and legal counsel. Managing affairs of corporate governance gets really difficult when the stakeholders are spread out across organizations, time zones, and level of involvement with the company, so that's where our team comes in!

This role is for an engineer on the Boardroom team within the Companies Business Unit. The Boardroom team is composed of collaborative and passionate engineers looking to break out and build an industry leading software platform for founders and board directors alike. Our group is a fully functioning unit composed of:

  • 3 engineers (2 senior, 1 mid-level)
  • 1 senior product manager
  • 1 senior designer
  • 1 UX researcher
  • 1 QA specialist

Despite this, our team feels and operates like a small startup. We place a high premium on collaboration, execution and impact. We value customer-obsessed, pragmatic, and driven engineers who can set their mind to a task and deliver great work. We understand that a team is greater than the sum of its parts -- we work together to break down problems and self organize to solve them as effectively as possible.

The Problems You’ll Solve Originally, Carta was built as a monolith -- all teams worked inside a single repo using Django. In 2018, Boardroom was the very first team to break out of the monolith. We learned a lot along the way, and we built a suite of services that run independently of the monolith, including an electronic document management system (EDMS), a WYSIWYG editor for board consents, and a real time voting approval and tracking system for these legal consents.

Now, we’re looking to scale and improve our resiliency as the rest of the Carta platform undergoes the shift to distributed services. We need to upgrade our technologies, collaborate with other teams to consolidate our software, and build bulletproof systems that can self-heal and operate effectively in a distributed environment. We’re looking for infra-leaning backend engineers who are excited by the challenge of helping Boardroom scale to meet these growing demands.

In this role, you will:

  • Tackle cross-team engineering initiatives to help the company embrace a robust, modern architecture for microservices and enable us to iterate quickly and safely for product features
  • Build reliable and scalable services across multiple layers of the stack. The primary areas of focus will be on backend app code, inter-service communication via gRPC, terraform / docker / kubernetes resource configurations.
  • Implement solutions that will improve the quality of life for developers on the team, allowing us to unlock our potential and be more agile in responding to the evolving demands of the product, team, and company.

The Impact You’ll Have The Boardroom product is a key pillar in fulfilling Carta’s mission of creating more owners. Your work will directly impact our future tech stack and engineering culture by paving the path for a services-based architecture while we fulfill our mission. By helping the team become more effective, you will empower the team to improve outcomes for our customers from the very beginning of their relationship with Carta -- enabling our customers to focus less on hunting down investors for approvals and more on the things that matter to them (like running their company).

Requirements

About You You have 3+ years of engineering experience building production quality systems, and ideally 1 year at a Series B funded (or earlier) startup. You have strong technical skills, and can work quickly to get stuff done. You’re a strong communicator and enjoy building thoughtful, reliable and elegant solutions that truly drive business objectives. You’re not a bystander -- you’re an active participant and have a strong analytical opinion and position on how software should be engineered. Last, but certainly not least, you’re someone who doesn’t let their ego drive their decision making. As is the case in any startup, we are learning how to build a better product and a better team as we go. We need to work together to solve problems -- there is no room on our team for a brilliant jerk.

Our current tech stack is React, Python, Django and Postgres. Our infrastructure is built around docker and kubernetes, with a handful of managed services in AWS. Prior experience with these technologies is ideal, but not required. We have people in our team who will help you figure it out, grow your skills and help you learn -- and ideally, learn from you too. We believe in transparent learning without ego.
